On October 15, 2014, Ron Stites co-Chaired the “Colorado Oil Shale Issues” section of the 34th Oil Shale Symposium. The Symposium was hosted by The Center for Oil Shale Technology and Research of the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado.
Mr. Stites also presented a talk on “Using Design of Experiments in Pilot Plant Work.” He explained how crucial pilot plant work is in the development of new technology -- especially as it relates to alternative fuels. Without good experimental design the quality of pilot plant data can become very suspect.
The talk covered a variety of topics including:
- Why Good DoE is Needed for Pilot Plant Work
- What Exactly is a Pilot Plant and How They Differ from “Bench” & “Commercial Scale”
- What are the Primary Goals of Pilot Plant Work
- What are Some of the Myths about Pilot Plant Work
- An Overview of the DoE Process
- A Summary of Critical Points in Experimental Design
In addition to the above Mr. Stites gave several examples of how good experimental design has made pilot plant work much more effective.
